Gov't to take control of Ferdene Pen
lands
Cabinet has approved a proposal by
the Ministry of Water and Housing to compulsorily acquire 4.05
hectares (10 acres) of land at 53 Nugent
Street, Ferdene Pen, St Catherine. The land will be used to
provide security of tenure for the 28 residents who are now there.
Speaking at a post-Cabinet press
briefing at Jamaica House in Kingston on Monday, Information
Minister Burchell Whiteman said the 28 families, most of whom have
occupied the property since the 1960s, have established both
permanent and temporary structures.
He pointed out that while they have
settled in an orderly manner that is conducive to a subdivision,
the subdivision had not been formally created. This had led to the
housing ministry's decision to regularise the situation and
provide the residents with security of tenure.
Senator Whiteman said the
ministry had obtained a valuation for the property in April 2002,
the premises have been valued and the land acquired compulsorily
at a cost of $1.5 million.
Now that the land has been
acquired, he added, proper subdivision can begin and the residents
properly situated and protected.
